Standards for data code and parameter dictionaries

Standard parameter dictionaries have been developed by BODC for many oceanographic and marine datasets. These provide a consistent way of recording what have been recorded within surveys and the units that have been used. For example.

By using these parameter dictionaries it is hoped to introduce greater consistence and to allow interoperability to enable searches for parameters between surveys and between archives. Using the parameter dictionaries will also help in the longer term when resources are distributed to Data Archive Centres under the Stewardship Plan.

Not all the data collected within the scope of marine renewables will have been subject to parameter dictionary coding. The existing dictionaries are restricted to marine physical, biological and chemical parameters. Socio-economic variables have yet to be considered.

The BODC parameter dictionary has been incorporated into the COWRIE data management system, with the support of BODC.

Data and information that does not currently form part of the BODC parameter dictionaries will be allocated additional parameter codings in line with the principles of the BODC system.
